We give very little importance to our mouth as much as we give to our looks. But if  people tend to shy   away even when one has dressed to best  or the  kids turn their face off when you want to give a good bye kiss. The reason to this lies in your mouth. HALITOSIS or bad breath coming from mouth can be the reason for this social embarrassment.
Most of the people suffering from this problem tend to use commercially available mouthwashes to get rid of this problem but are disappointed as the results don't last long . Well the common mistake what people are doing is that they are not figuring out the cause of bad breath . This blogpost briefly summarizes the common reasons of HALITOSIS.

1.The most common cause is the bacterial deposits on the teeth gums and tongue which accumulate as a result of poor oral hygiene measures. After having food a thin layer of plaque forms over the teeth which is a house to millions of bacteria. This has to be brushed off regularly failing which it thickens up and later forms calculus( hard deposits on teeth).
The bacterias produce foul smell as they feed upon the food stuck on the teeth leading to bad breath.

2.Second common reason for bad breath is recurrent upper respiratory tract infection. A long standing sinus infection, nasal secretions due to respiratory infections can be a big cause for the mouth to smell bad.

3.Another common reason is TONSIL STONES. Well don't know if many are aware of this or not but it can be a major reason for your child's mouth smelling bad even after meticulous brushing .
Tonsils are structured like prunes with many crevices and pockets in which bacteria and debris accumulate and form tonsil stones. This microbial proliferation inside these pockets leads to bad breath.

4.we all have heard that a healthy body starts with a healthy mouth the vice versa holds true as well. IF the stomach has some indigestion problem, the reflux of acid and indigested food particles can cause foul smell from mouth.

5. Last but not the least check out your diet too. Certain food like excess of garlic or onions, too much of alcohol etc for that matter can be a culprit why your mouth never smells fresh. So check of the foods with pungent odours.

So go ahead and decode the reasons if you suffer from bad breath and then take the correct remedies for the same.

Does cleaning make teeth weak ,,,,,myth or reality

A dental cleaning visit or oral prophylaxis visit is very commonly associated with the fear of teeth getting weak.In fact it is not so, the teeth tend to become stronger if cleaning is done regularly at 6 months interval at a dental clinic.
When we eat food the particles get deposited and form a thin layer over teeth which is called plaque .This gradually hardens into calculus. This plaque and calculus is a house to millions of bacteria and is the nidus for dental CARIES(CAVITY) to develop. The toxins produced by these micro organisms lead to gum diseases as well i.e swollen gums, bleeding of gums looseness of teeth etc. Moreover as this food decays it produces bad odour commonly referred to as HALITOSIS.

A SIMPLE PROFESSIONAL ORAL PROPHYLAXIS CAN PREVENT THESE PROBLEMS.

IT MAKES THE GUMS STRONGER AND MORE FIRMER, DECREASES BLEEDING FROM GUMS AND FRESHENS UP THE BREATH.

BENEFITS OF ORAL PROPHYLAXIS/TEETH CLEANING

1.Brightens up the teeth and cures BAD BREATH
2.Early detection of dental caries(which at later stages may get converted to deep lesions and the cost of treatement increases many times)
3.Stops gums disease and bone problems.(gingivitis and periodontitis).
4.  Removes plaque which is nothing else but bacterias proliferating in the mouth.

So, an effort as small as cleaning of teeth if done at regular intervals can help avoid many dental problems and make your mouth healthy.(It is the most economic dental procedure which can prevent many major dental problems which reqiure much more expense)

Hey friends here I come up with a very simple blog on toothpastes. A fresh breath and clean teeth  is a nice start to everday and boosts up the confidence to smile and greet everyone. The food never tastes good to the teeth which have not been brushed properly.
But how many of you actually think before buying a toothpaste ,,,most just pick it up by blindly believing the advertisements.
Here's a short information on how to select the toothpastes. There and many types of tooth pastes in the market flouridated toothpastes,de sensitzing tooth pastes, whitening toothpastes, tooth pastes for kids, natural tooth pastes etc.
One should carefully choose amongst these. The toothpaste should carry a IDA(india) and ADA(US) seal of approval . The paste form of tooth pastes are best as compared to gel or powder form. The powder form  are more abrasive and may wear off the enamel whereas the gels are too mild to clean the teeth properly.
The paste form has adequate abrasiveness to remove the plaque efficiently.
A fluoridated toothpaste(1000-1500ppm)
has flouride which prevents caries(cavities) more effectively. However the safe limits should be considered as excess of flouride does no good. Caution should be exercised while using these pastes in kids as the kids tend to swallow the pastes. Hence a pea sized amount of kids paste(which has lower levels of fluoride-less than 600ppm ) should be used in kids .
The desensitising tooth pastes have components which block the dentinal tubules(the second layer after enamel) and hence reduce sensitivity and may not do any good to normal teeth.
The whitening pastes have peroxides or bicarbonate of soda which cause whitening by mild bleaching of teeth ,however these may cause sensitivity in patients with thin enamel abraded enamel. They just provide mild whitening and professional in office bleaching should be considere for dark stains.
Some pastes claim to have natural plants extracts to clean the teeth, and are herbal in nature.
Some total care toothpastes have all the ingredients to cover up all the above mentioned functions.

SO next time you pick up a toothpaste you should keep in mind what actually you expect to achieve,ie whitening or relief fro sensitivity etc.

RED ALERT for impacted wisdom teeth....the important warning signs for its removal

The third molars in our jaws ,very commonly referred to as the Wisdom teeth by a layman are usually under doubt for removal.
Not everyone has problems with these teeth but still majority of us may have a struggling experience with WISDOM TEETH at some point of our lives.
This post briefly sums up few important facts about these teeth and important warning signs which should be considered in decision making of its removal.

Wisdom teeth....what are they...
We generally refers to entire dentition as a set of 32 teeth, but in most of the cases the number of teeth in the jaws is 28 as the four wisdom teeth or the third molars are not present in everyone's mouth..
wisdom teeth are the third molars which are the last teeth to erupt(may be partially erupted or not erupted as well). They are located farthest in the jaw and may be sit completely silent in the jaw or might just create a very painful condition as the struggle to erupt through the jaws.

Why does wisdom tooth pain...
wisdom teeth can commonly be referred to as a vestigial part of our dentition and our jaw doesn't have enough space to acommodate it.Hence as this big tooth forces its way out of bone it causes pain. Also these teeth are generally places at an angle and are not straight so they also create considerable stresses on the adjacent teeth as they progress to come out .
This creates an uncomfortable situation which is acccompanied by pain, swelling, difficulty in eating etc.(But in some cases they may remain silent for a lifetime , stuck in the jaw).
Sometimes its not the tooth but the bacterial invasion at the inflammed site which is a cause of pain.

Complications
Wisdom teeth can lead to the complications such as GUM imfection, INABILITY to open mouth and swallow, DECAY of adjacent teeth , And in worst cases DEVELOPMENT OF A CYST around it.

Symptoms
    • swelling and pain at the tooth site
    • inflammation and abscess in the gums covering the wisdom tooth referred to as PERICORONITIS
    • difficulty in eating and swallowing
    • Inability to open mouth
    •  Pain referring to nearby regions
    • bad taste and unpleasent odour
    Removal
The removal of wisdom teeth should be considered if its eruption is accompanied by above mentioned symptoms. However sometimes it may even be removed as a precautionary measure to prevent its complications.

When and Whom to get it removed from
The wisdom tooth should be removed as early as possible(when diagnosted that it is IMPACTED ) as its easier to remove when the roots are still forming. It can be removed even later but as the age progresses it becomes fused with the bone making the removal procedure difficult.

The procedure can be safely performed under local anaesthesia preferably by a SPECIALIST ORAL SURGEON to make the procedure comfortable and to reduce the risk of complications(breakage of tooth, aspiration etc as its very close to the larynx and pharynx)
